Clelia Crossing the Tiber
This episode of Roman history is taken from Plutarch: young Roman hostage given to Etruscan king Porsena, Clelia fled from the Tiber with her fellow captives. This story, highlighting feminine courage, was a popular subject in the seventeenth century art.
