The Spanish poet Rafael Alberti, featured in this painting, was one of the last representatives of the Generation of '27. His active support of the Republican cause forced him to go into exile and he wound up living in Argentina for 23 years. Upon his return to Madrid at the end of the 1970s, he befriended Pont Vergés and became a recurring motif in his paintings.
